As a water filtration provider, Greenwave is very aware of the various sustainability issues related to water industry also in the context of tourism and hospitality, which can generate huge amount of waste, very often in developing countries. The problem that our company aims to solve is to reduce the negative effects caused by the bottled water and plastics industries.

How is plastic pollution
addressed in China?
The Chinese government has already realized the problem with plastic pollution and introduced the regulation regarding single use plastics and in January 2020 issued a “Plan on Further Strengthening the Control of Plastic Pollution” which stipulates that by the end of 2022 star-rated hotels across China will not be allowed to offer disposable plastic supplies and the ban will be extended to all hotels and home stays by 2025. Unfortunately, the new regulation does not address the huge problem of plastic bottles.
Plastics have become essential components of products and packaging because they’re durable, light, and cheap. But though they offer numerous benefits, plastics are made of fossil fuels and emit green house gases throughout their products life cycle according to the report called “Plastic & Climate: The Hidden Costs of a Plastic Planet,” released by the Center for International Environmental Law.
At Greenwave, we are very aware of the plastic pollution and massive amounts of trash generated by bottled water industry. We are also deeply concerned by huge waste of natural resources-mainly oil that is wasted on production of single-use plastic bottles that end up in landfills or incinerators after being used just once.
Everyone who has ever visited hotel in China knows how this works. Since the tap water is not drinkable in China, in majority of cases hotels managers equip the guest rooms with the bottled drinking water. In the shared areas such as gym or the hall water dispensers are commonly used. The cooking water is either direct or roughly filtered tap water or water gallons. Taking into consideration the scale of the hospitality industry in China, and the fact that the great majority of hotels still consume water in a plastic packaging on daily basis- the scale of the problem is enormous!
Plastic bottles and sustainability
Refining the plastic required to create a 5-gallon jug produces a large amount of greenhouse gas emission. Many plastic jugs used to hold water are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), since the material is strong and light. Making PET is CO2 intensive task.
Data suggest that manufacturing, transportation, refilling, and disposal, a single plastic 5-gallon jug is responsible for the emission of around 1.90 pounds of CO2 which is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from burning about one pound of coal. That’s another reason to reduce water bottles and switch to a bottle-free water dispensers.
Transportation issue and environmental costs
Besides the manufacturing, huge amounts of fossil-fuels are wasted on transport of bottles from the factory to the supermarket or client’s house. Meanwhile, every hotel has a stable supply of water and there is absolutely no need to waste so much resources on delivering water to the hotel’s doors.
For example, 5-gallon water delivery services for a 50-person company will emit as much CO2 into the environment asdriving about 47476 miles in a passenger vehicle per year. In comparison, a 50-person company that uses bottle-free water dispenser will emit the equivalent to 730 miles in a passenger vehicle per year.
How does Greenwave help hotels
to be more sustainable?
Greenwave aims to help our customers eliminate the use of bottled drinking water delivery services and the associated fossil fuel waste, carbon emissions, and additional plastic waste by filtering a building’s existing water supply at the point-of-use (POU) via a bottle free water dispenser (with heating/cooling function).
If the hotel uses Greenwave’s filters the water quality will be as good as, or even better than bottled water at much lower financial and environmental cost. Replacing bottled water and water dispensers with the water purification system simply makes sense from the economic point of view and additionally makes the logistics process so much easier for the hotel managers.
FUN FACT: there is more water in that bottle than just the liquid living inside it. In fact, it takes more water to make the plastic bottle than the bottle itself provides. Even though most bottled water sources are pretty much the same as what comes from your faucet, water bottlers charge up to 1,900 times the price of tap water.
At this point we would like to share with you our newest initiative: Green Hotel Initiative that we are planning to launch this year. Hope that many of you who support sustainability and reduction of plastic pollution are willing to jump on this green hotel wave with Greenwave! Stay tuned for more info in the future.
At Greenwave, we are committed to taking more on our shoulders and we hope to encourage more hotel managers and hospitality industry representatives to embark on this journey with us. Make positive impact on the planet with Greenwave!
