We published an article explaining all there is to know regarding drinking water in China last time. The article received a very positive response from readers, and we would like to expand upon the most recurring and popular questions it raised in the following paragraphs! (It's normal that our peers might have different understanding toward some of the questions. This is only about our thoughts.)

What are drinking water choices?
Tap water(boiled) 自来水（烧开）
Tap water might be the last choice for most of the people here for drinking. Although the quality has been improved compared to earlier years, the issues still present do not make it as a good source for drinking for consumers. The excessive chlorine and its byproducts, the collected impurities from the long aged piping system and the metal ions inside don’t just affect the taste and color or cause sediments (after boiling) but also concern users for the potential health threats beyond the dry skin and hair issues. Boiling is what many locals used to do before. The process helps to kill bacteria and microorganisms. However, for the tap water, what evaporates out through boiling will be mainly pure water and what is left will be the impurities.
Natural mineral water 天然矿泉水
There are more imported brands in China than local brands for natural bottled water. For this type of water, despite the plastic used and high price, it is good for drinking only in cool or cold temperature, but not suitable with heat, the high temperature making the minerals inside easy to become sediments. These will lead to organ stones instead of being absorbed by human body. It is therefore neither good for cooking nor cost effective.
Regular bottled water 桶装水
Bottled water from genuine sources will go through some in depth treatment such as distillation or reverse osmosis treatment. The water will be free of any bad impurities including healthy minerals (artificial minerals could be added to some bottled water but the quantity is low). Although some people might feel that the water is too clean, it is the most suitable choice for most clients to drink and cook. However, the plastic waste, the inconvenience of use, the needed dispenser’s disinfection to avoid secondary pollution as well as the overall high cost should be considered.
Simply filtered water 简单过滤水
Carbon filters, ultra filtration filters and ionizers are some of the basic filtration systems. They will remove chlorine and a lot of big sized impurities, but the small sized impurities will go through. That is why the TDS of the filtered water will not change much. For this type of water, it will be better to boil before drinking.
RO purified drinking water RO直饮水
Water treated from systems based on reverse osmosis technology which is often used to produce bottled water, it is indeed pure and does not contain any heavy metals and other impurities. It is suitable for drinking and cooking and what we mainly recommend to use for families in China. For people caring about minerals and alkalinity, systems like our Alatai RO water purifier with post re-mineralization filter will be the perfect choice.
Among the above solutions, when thinking about water quality, convenience to use for drinking and cooking, cost and environmental impact, to install a reverse osmosis drinking water purifier would be the best option and is what we recommend for all our clients.
Should I drink only mineral/alkaline water?
Many people have fallen prey to the myth that drinking water must contain a certain amount of healthy minerals, even high profile people might have disputes on this. Let us look at the fact. While water contains some elements essential to health, vast amounts must be consumed to get anything substantial, i.e., 1200cups of water contains as much calcium as can be found in one glass of milk. Thus, a balanced diet is the key to maintaining health.
Some saying is that healthy people's body fluid is alkaline and thus people need to drink alkaline water to stay healthy. This is very questionable as well. For stomach fluid, it is strongly acid, which is good for digestion. If alkaline water is better, it will neutralize the stomach fluid and cause some problems. The scientific explanation is that human body has the perfect balancing system. No matter acid or alkaline water gets inside, the body will automatically balance the PH. For any one valuing PH, the following report could be referred to. Please click the picture for report in Chinese.
Metal ions in the water are the decisive factor to the acidity and alkalinity. If metal content is high, the water will be alkaline. That is why tap water and simply filtered water are alkaline. While for purified water treated with in-depth filtration like reverse osmosis technology, it is a little acidic because heavy metal ions(which are alkaline) have been removed from water, which exactly reflects that the water is safe!
At present, the industry has some new choices like what Greenwave does – some post filter behind the RO system will bring back some minerals and alkalize the water to improve the taste, but this does not mean that drinking water have to be alkaline!
What to consider before getting one purifier?
Find out what you need 明白需要
Some families may have settled down in a location where the water quality isn't that bad, and are only considering drinking filters. Other families may experience concerns with dry skin, and are looking for solutions to filter water for daily usage. There are appliances to ensure the quality of water in every aspect of the household, and accessories to make life more convenient (hot and cold water without needing a microwave or adding ice!).
It's all about knowing what you want, and if you really don't know, many companies offer free consultation services. Like Greenwave. To have a consultation first to see if there is any special requirement for the sink, valves and space as well as electricity to ensure if the installation will be possible and to know which kind of filter you will need can be of great help.
Make an informed decision 明智选择
Ask around and do research. Is the brand trustworthy? How good is their after-sales service? Make sure what you're buying is worth the investment!
Avoid scammers 当心骗子
There are many fake companies out there feigning real companies by copying their logo, certifications, product concepts, or using big companies’ brand image to cheat around( for example using Blueair or 3M as their names, but not real at all)… and it can be hard to tell what's legit. Read the link to know one fake company.
Value referals 重视推荐
Our advice is to find a trusted network for expatriates in your cities; they're often highly regulated and can help you filter out choices to find the right one for you.
After you’ve ended up with a selection of reliable choices, make sure you choose the one that is the best fit for your circumstances, be it pricing or function. For drinking filters in particular, we recommend that you keep an eye out for reverse osmosis technology! Some people might say RO overkills, but some doctors also say that without a RO filter you could not survive. So try to make your own judgment.
Ensure the product you intend to purchase can actually be installed and that maintenance services will be provided! During this stage, you can cooperate with a brand's customer service if you have any questions – how your product will be installed, if any customized solutions are required, maintenance times… And of course, try to find an English-speaking company, which will be much more convenient communication-wise!
Can I drink the filtered water directly?
For simply filtered water from carbon systems, ultra filtration systems or regular ionizers, clients are not recommended to drink directly from its sprout since the filtration precision for these systems is not high enough. Better to boil them before the drinking. For the purified water through reverse osmosis equipments, it could be used for drinking directly out of the sprouts.
For fans of ionizers in China, some RO system will be suggested to use as pre filter. To get that done, there might be some installation issue. Greenwave did that for some clients before and could help with the RO system and installation.
Why does my filtered water read the same
as the tap water for the TDS test?
Basic filters refer to almost all non-RO filters include carbon filter, KDF filter,ultra-filtration filter, etc, which are often found in whole house filtration system, water softeners, shower filters, faucet filters, etc. The basic filtration system mainly targets chlorine and the big sized pollutants like rust, sands and many other chemicals in the water, which means the smaller ones like metal ions and other charged particles can easily escape from the capture of the basic filters. That is to say, no matter how many stages of filters are used inside, the filtered water will be with almost no change for the reading of TDS. These basic filters can even increase the TDS reading when the surface of the filter is clogged up by excessive amount of pollutants if the filters fail to be changed in time. However, it does not necessarily mean that these basic filters are not working if they are used for non-drinking purposes. For RO systems, there will be substantial differences on the purified water for the TDS reading.
All about TDS 关于TDS
Click the picture above to know more about the total dissolved solids(TDS). The water reads less than 50 ppm from reverse osmosis systems and bottled water treated from tap water. Other activated carbon, ultrafiltration or ionization systems as well shower or faucet filters do not lower TDS readings.
Why do i need to change the filters
regularly though the TDS is good?
To ensure the effectiveness of the filter, regular maintenance will be needed. Irregular maintenance or overdue filters will make the water not as clean as expected, affect the longevity of the RO membrane and the system, and bring uncomfortable user experience.
Some Japanese company changes the filters for their clients every month. That is too short and causes inconvenience for clients as well as wasting money. A lot of local companies do the filter change every 6 months, which is too long that it’s hard to secure the water quality. It’s not that good to change the filters either too short or too long. Based on the testing and service experiences we have, to change the filters every 3 to 6 months depending on usage will not just ensure the filtered water quality, but also affect users less.
We keep all our customers' information (contact info, address, product purchased/rented, dateof delivery, etc.) in our database, which is updated constantly by our customer service specialists. We will remind each customer periodically to replace their filters to ensure that your health is protected. Our reminder will be made via emails and/or phone calls, which is the very reason why we need your contact info in the first place.
What are the differences between bottled water
and purified drinking water from RO?
Bottled water from a company with strict regulations in place is safe to drink, but small, unchecked companies are an invisible health hazard. They may reuse their bottles past the 2-3 year expiry date to save on expenses. To disinfect those bottles for reuse, strong hydrogen peroxide is poured in with no guarantee it's been fully rinsed out. During transportation, it may be exposed to heavy sunlight and conditions that jar the lid into opening - leading to potential contamination by micro- plastics and organisms. On top of all that, secondary pollution may occur when water is ran through an unclean water dispenser.
Most of the bottled water is just filtered tap water from a large scale filtration system. Like how this bottled water is produced, families could use a small water filter and filter the water at home for drinking water too. That’s a new trend. Comparing to the bottled water, using a proper filter will not just get the whole family cleaner water with more peaceful mind, and will also bring a lot more convenience for cooking and flushing foods.
Families have their own judgment and final decision toward which type of systems to use. As for Greenwave, we are a believer for reverse osmosis systems and mainly run RO choices for our clients. To make the filtered water fully with no any heavy metals, RO systems in our eyes are the only choice. After all, it makes senseto have nutrients (healthy minerals) while removing the heavy metals.
Is NSF certified water filter better?
NSF certification is a United States certification and mandatory for systems sold in some states. While it is not compulsory in China and other countries, it acts as a testimony of the product’s quality and trustworthiness. However, for any product sold on the Chinese market, testing will be needed to meet local standards, even with the NSF certification. China has different evaluation systems to meet the criteria ofthe NSF. The NSF tests mainly the structural integrity, material safety and performance. China has material safety series number as well as testing report to secure the safety of the system.
Most products having the NSF certification are simple, non RO filters and easy to be tested by the NSF comparatively. They will naturally be using the same components and stay the same for many years. For the fast growing Chinese market, products tend to be upgraded and changed time by time, meaning NSF certified ones might not be the best ones.
As long as the products are tested to be good in China, it will be fine to use in the country, where the NSF does not have an advantage over other systems. Besides, it is better to trust the feedback from the communities instead of the NSF certification.
