Water is among the top concerns for many families moving to China already, and should be something newcomers need to adapt to. It's true that tap water is not suitable for drinking (and cooking) directly in most areas, but to worry about the excessive heavy metals inside might be not necessary. Bottled water is an often used choice for meeting the drinking water needs. However, now there is a new trend. This article is to share more about the tap water and different drinking water choices.
Is tap water in China safe?
A common knowledge here in China is that the water is not drinkable and contains some nasty substances. Residents in China deal with this problem by boiling water or purchasing bottled water opposed to many oversea countries where people just drink their tap water directly, which is of course much more convenient and cost-saving. However, is tap water really that disastrous in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen? The answer will be no surprisingly.
Changes of water sources, improved water treatment facilities and harder regulations have been implemented in recent years, and the water people use here has become much safe. The hundreds of independent water testing results could be for that result (no heavy metals). However, safe water does not mean that it is suitable for everyone and especially for drinking purpose. Just like the old saying in China, “It is easy to get sick if you cannot get used to the food and water in a new environment.” That might happen to these newly moving to a new city in China.
What's in the tap water?
It will be not what we do to share threatening messages like that tap water contains a lot of heavy metals and lead people to use filters. That's neither right, nor really helpful, though the following aspects are worth to be careful for users for tap water.
Chlorine and chlorides are the disinfectants and byproducts during the disinfection process to concern. China regulates the minimum use of the free chlorine inside the water to ensure the water is fully disinfected, not like its counterparts abroad. These in the tap water not just, make water smell, cause skin or hair problems when people use it for cleaning or showering, but also impose healthy threat from the foods cooking with the water.
Collected impurities including rust, copper dioxide and many more from the aged pipes transporting water to the endusers through miles of piping systems will be another factor to concern, even for these living in the new neighborhoods. These impurities are not needed for human body and will lead to more than colored water. （Hard to remove these with simple treatment.）
Though there might be some other problems like these not tested including anti biotics, what we suggest users to be careful is about the hard minerals. These not just affect taste and also lead to the dramatic amount of stains and sediments.Though people are instructed to get minerals from water, these seem to cause more problems for people here as over the years there are a lot of people suffering from the stones in bodys. （Clean is key.）
Bottled water then? No!
Bottled water has been chosen by many and brings the expected peaceful mind in the past 10 years for its treatment behind and marketing. Even for now, there are still quite a lot of people using it. However, by the time when people understands and have choices, the sitation has been gradually changed.
Fake water hurts the industry. A disclosure from the authoritative report in Beijing in 2007 indicates that over 70% of the bottled water sold in the market is counterfeited. The bottled water dealers either refill the used tank with tap water or just filter the water with very basic facilities.
Besides, the secondary pollution is inevitable for several reasons. First, during the transportation process, water is exposed to sunlight, plastic materials may enter the water and the sweat from hands might cause microorganism breeding in bottle neck. Second, the bottled water must be contaminated if not drunk within 3 days once it is uncapped. The water dispenser not disinfected regularly will lead to excessive bacteria and microbes for sure.
What's more is about inconvenience. Time will be spent to order water, wait for delivery and change the bottles every couple of days.Especially when using it for cooking, it will take a longer time. If an ayi is hired to do cooking at home, for the inconvenience, tap water might be used.
Finally are the cost and the environmental impact. In the long run to use bottles water for meeting all drinking and cooking will cost more. Also that will trigger a lot of plastic waste and environmental pollution due to the transportation of the bottles. Better to use bottled water less to be good for the environment.
For these using bottled water, we suggest to get the bottled water from reliable sources, store them in the cool place with no sunlight use them out within 3 days after taking off the cap and boil the water before drinking. These will ensure the safety of use at most.
Look to drinking water filters
Recently, drinking water filters have become more preferable compared to bottled water as they are fresher, more user-friendly and environmental. Typically for drinking water, pollutants and impurities like chlorine, bacteria, heavy metals and organic compounds including antibiotics and pesticides should all be removed. Though some consumers tend to care more about the minerals or alkalinity, one irrefutable fact is that the water filters have to make the water clean enough for drinking.
To remove the pollutants from the water, a certain combination of treatment methods will be selected and integrated into a system to make sure water will be filtered to meet the expected quality. Based on the integrated treatments, the drinking water filters can be categorized as following; carbon system, ultra filtration system, reverse osmosis system and ionizer.

Different drinking water purifiers
The following specifies the main drinking water filters in the market and provides a basic summary of their primary traits. Their performance or effectiveness might not be detailed here, but that does not affect the contents below. TDS is mentioned below for water quality which could be read in picture for details.
All about TDS
Click the picture above to know more about the total dissolved solids(TDS). The water reads less than 50 ppm from reverse osmosis systems and bottled water treated from tap water. Other activated carbon, ultrafiltration or ionization systems as well shower or faucet filters do not lower TDS readings.
Using mainly spun fiber and activated carbon is commonly used overseas, removing pesticides, chlorine and particles larger than 0.2 um. Sometimes there is a UV light used behind. However, hard minerals and metals will still remain in the water. The taste of water is still not that good. There will still be sediments after boiling, and TDS reading for the filtered water is almost the same.
Using mainly spun filber, activated carbon filter and ultrafiltration membrene( whih is better than micro filtration) and removing pesticides, bacteria, chlorine andparticles larger than 0.01 um. However, hard minerals andmetals will remain. The water taste is still not that good. There will still besediments after boiling, and TDS reading for the filtered water is lowered alittle but not much.
Using mainly spun fiber, activated carbon and ionization sertting to turn tap water into 2 choices: alkaline water for drinking and acid water for cleaning. Alkaline water is said to be good for patients in hospitals but not that recommended for healthy individuals while acidic water is good for washing veggies or fruits. Hard minerals and metals will remain in the water. The taste of water is still not much changed. There will still be sediments after boiling, and TDS reading for the filtered water is even higher.
Reverse osmosis system
Using mainly spun filber, activated carbon filter and reverse osmosis membrene to remove pesticides, chlorine and heavy metals larger than 0.0001 um. Theoretically nothing is going through except H2O.The taste of water is good. There will be no sediments after boiling, and TDS reading of the filtered water is less than 50. Some RO systems have remineralization filters.
